Meet Our Two New Board Co-Chairs. Impact giving's Dynamic Duo!
From Psychologist to Philanthropist: Kathy Abels' Path to Impact Giving
Kathy’s journey to supporting her community has roots in the San Fernando Valley, where she grew up before earning her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Occidental College. After a thriving two-decade-long career in private practice, Kathy's focus shifted towards family and community impact. Now residing in Corona del Mar’s iconic Flower Streets, she’s a proud mother of five, grandmother to six (soon to be seven), and an avid pickleball player at Newport Beach’s Tennis and Tennis Club (TTC), where she first met fellow Impact Giving member Karen Grundhofer.
Kathy’s passion for community empowerment is woven into her family’s legacy. Her father, Ron Simon, founded the Simon Family Foundation, which addresses educational barriers faced by disadvantaged students in Orange County. "We’re helping 200 students a year reach their college dreams,” she shares, noting that her psychology background aids in supporting these students’ potential. Recently, she expanded the foundation’s initiatives with a new grant-making division, enhancing the support offered to young scholars.
Her introduction to Impact Giving felt serendipitous. “I love the collaborative spirit of this board,” she says, adding that every voice brings a unique perspective. One little-known detail about Kathy? She’s a licensed motorcyclist, inspired after a Key West trip where she and her husband zipped around on rented mopeds. That passion carried back stateside, blending seamlessly with her adventurous spirit and her commitment to helping others soar.
Making an Impact: LauriE DuBchansky's Mission to Empower through Financial Planning and Philanthropy
Laurie's journey to Impact Giving is defined by her dedication to service and community. Originally from Los Angeles, she settled in Corona del Mar 12 years ago with her husband of 38 years. Together, they share two married children and one grandchild. As an independent personal financial planner, Lori noticed that many people are turned away due to asset minimums, so she opened her practice eight years ago to ensure that everyone could access financial support.
Laurie was introduced to Impact Giving through Gina, a fellow professional in the financial sector. Now the board chair of Impact Giving in Orange County, Lori has been part of the organization for eight years. “There’s something uniquely powerful about being in a room full of women who all want to make the world a better place,” she says.
Outside of her professional and philanthropic roles, Laurie is a dynamic traveler, with a love for remote expeditions and baking in high volume for big gatherings. Known for hosting spirited football watch parties, she’s even baked up to 300 cookies for office events. Her commitment to both her clients and Impact Giving embodies her dedication to making meaningful changes in every community she touches.
